| | We've visited the big three theme parks in Japan; Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea and Universal Studios (USJ). My favourite of the three is DisneySea; mainly because it has a better atmosphere than Disneyland, and USJ is almost a direct copy of Universal Studio Hollywood (without the backlot) which we have been to twice, so it was a little boring for us. Be warned it can be very cold in Tokyo in winter; it snowed New Years Eve, and the wind chill makes it even worse, so dress in layers. Disneyland has a big New Years Eve party in both parks, however, only those staying in the official Disney hotels are guaranteed entry. There is a ballot for the public for tickets which closes in September. We had initially intended going to Disneyland for New Year, however, there is nothing on their website about the restriction on tickets, and I found out about the ballot in November; it closes in September, so we missed out. It is about the only big party for New Years in Tokyo. Apparently, New Years in Japan is akin to Christmas in the West, i.e. it is celebrated with family in traditional ways. Downtown Tokyo is a sight to behold on a Friday night, streets totally devoid of people & nearly all the shops closed, particularly when that Friday is New Years Eve. Getting There: from Tokyo station take the Keiyo Line (Red) to Miahama station. From here you can walk to Disneyland or take the Disney Train, from the nearby station, to DisneySea. How Much: Adults Day Passport ¥5,500 , 2 Day Passport ¥9,800. Tokyo DisneySea Pictures: Tokyo DisneySea
On the negative side you get the same huge crowds, the same long lines and the same plethora of food & shopping outlets. On the plus side though you get 2 Disney Parks right next door to each other; Tokyo Disney & Tokyo Disney Sea, fantastic rides, superb vistas and all the laughs and smiles that you can only get from visiting the ''Happiest Place On Earth". Disney Sea is divided into 7 themed areas; Mediterranean Harbour Based on Venetian style harbour it reminded me a lot of the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas; complete with gondola rides. The Gondola ride is interesting; with Japanese boatman trying to speak and sing Italian. They also only spoke Japanese during the ride so it was difficult to work out what was going on; but it was nonetheless a pleasant ride. The Tokyo Disney Sea Hotel Miracosta fronts onto the harbour giving residents an excellent view of the nightly fireworks. | Picture: Mediterranean Harbour
| Mysterious Island Contains Mount Prometheus which is the bubbling volcano that can be seen from throughout the park. Also the "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" attraction where you can explore the depths of the ocean aboard Captain Nemo's research submarine. This is a six seat ride which has a water filled glass window giving the impression that you are underwater. As you descend to 20,000 leagues, you pass a giant squid and some weird and interesting critters. The second ride is the Journey to the Centre of the Earth rollercoaster, which travels in, around and though Mount Prometheus. | Picture: Mysterious Island at Night
| | American Waterfront The central attraction here is the S.S. Columbia, a realistic sized steam liner, containing shops & restaurants. If you ever wondered what it would be like to have dinner in a Titanic style dining room, the the S.S. Columbia Dining Room is probably as close as you can get. The American Waterfront is themed on a New England fishing village and includes several vintage trucks and cars, an electric train and the Transit Steam Liner. The buildings have that old world feel right down to the old style street lights. | Picture: S.S. Columbia
| Port Discovery The area is themed on a small seaside port and is complete with a small lagoon and old sail boats. The buildings are from the mid 1800's. Home to; Aquatopia; a "look mum no hands" water bumper boat ride for kids: big & small and, Storm Rider; a simulator where you descend into the eye of a storm to experience the wild turbulence of the powerful winds inside.

| | Lost River Delta An area themed based on a Myian temple. There are two central rides here; - The "Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull"; which also had one of the longest queues on our first visit. You ride in a Jeep through various caves, paths and jungle before being chased by a big round rock - just like the movie.
- The Raging Spirits; a roller coaster complete with a 360 degree loop and the normal sharp turns and bumps. Not a very long ride but still worth the wait.
| Picture: Raging Spirits
| Arabian Coast The area is themed on the movie Aladdin and comes complete with an old style 2 storey carousel, where you can ride on camels, elephants, griffins and the Genie from Aladdin. It also has Sindbad's Seven Voyages which is akin to the "It's a Small World" ride at Disneyland. The only problem with this ride is that it is in Japanese so it's a little difficult to follow the story. | Picture: Sindbad's Seven Voyages
| Mermaid Lagoon Definitely a place for kids; adults won't even fit in the rides. Based on the movie Little Mermaid. | Picture: Mermaid Lagoon at Night

These attractions were complimented with the usual array of Disney characters posing for photos, along with Looney Toons cars, trucks & trains driving around. At night the park takes on a whole different atmosphere, more like a holiday resort by the water side than a theme park in a thriving metropolis. However the lines don't get any shorter, in part no doubt to the cheap after 6:00pm Starlight pass. Pictures: Tokyo DisneySea Fireworks

I've been to Disneyland Anaheim and whilst each of the themed lands in Tokyo Disney are the same as Anaheim, the overall park was cleaner and better maintained, the staff were helpful (even with the language barrier), the food was of a higher quality and the queue system is much better. Admittedly, I was in Anaheim in 1999 and they may now have this, but the Fast Pass system in Tokyo Disney (and DisneySea) is excellent. It allows you - for no extra cost - to book your time to go on the rides. Some of the rides, such as Space Mountain and The Pirates of the Caribbean didn't even have a line. Picture: Disneyland Castle
| World Bazaar This is the first land you come to as it is immediately inside the main gates. There are no rides in World Bazaar just shops and restaurants. However you do get a great view castle. | Picture: Western River Railroad
| Adventureland Cruise along a tropical jungle river and get a glimpse into the mysterious world of pirates. Adventureland has several attractions; The Pirates of the Caribbean is a water ride, where you won't get wet, but where you will see the some real pirates who sing "Dead Men Tell No Tales" in Japanese...clever pirates. Jungle Cruise; venture deep into the mysterious, danger filled jungles. Western River Railroad; climb aboard a real steam train for a trip around the wilderness Swiss Family Treehouse; an actual tree house based on the Swiss Family movie.

| Westernland The old American frontier. There are several interesting things to do here; - The Mark Twain Riverboat; enjoy a leisurely trip around Westernland aboard this old style paddle river boat.
- Big Thunder Mountain; venture onto this rollercoaster themed as a mine train, for an action packed ride.
- Westernland Shootin' Gallery; buy 10 shots for 200yen and see what sort of sharp shooter you are.
- Tom Sawyer Island Raft; in the centre of the lagoon is Tom Sawyer Island. The only way to get to the island is via a log raft.
| Picture: Beaver Brothers Explorer Canoes
| Critter Country Home of; Splash Mountain; the water ride where you do get wet Beaver Brothers Explorer Canoes; paddle around the lagoon dodging riverboats and other river traffic. Don't expect a leisurely cruise down the river, you actually have to paddle the canoes.
| Picture: It's A Small World
| Fantasyland Join Cinderella, Peter pan and all your favourite heroes. Home of; - Castle Carousel; ride 1 of 90 hand painted horses
- Haunted mansion
- It's A Small World - listening to the song "It's a Small World" being sung in Japanese is an experience in itself!
- Alice's Tea Party
- Pooh's Hunny Hunt

Universal Studios JapanOpened in 2001 USJ is park is almost a direct copy of the Hollywood version, right down to the 'City Walk' and 'Hard Rock Cafe', but without the Backlot, however it is highly popular with the locals and with good reason. Getting There: Access to the park is incredibly easy via the train system - from Osaka Station take the JR Yumesaki line from Platform 1 to Sakurajima and get off at the Universal City station. The Train is easy to find - it's painted in the Universal Studio Livery. How Much: Adults: ¥5,500 for 1 Day, ¥9,800 for 2 Days, Child: ¥3,700 for 1 Day, ¥6,700 for 2 Days Picture: Universal Studios Cinema 4-D
| Hollywood Universal Studios Cinema 4-D; Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic. 4D extends the standard 3D movie magic by adding the 4th dimension of touch to the experience. Through the clever use of mist sprayers, seat movement and jets of air the action on the screen literally hits you in the face. This is the same technology as Universal Studios Hollywoods Shrek 4D; which they also have here. The soundtrack is in Japanese and there are no subtitles or English sessions. However, this doesn't detract from the overall experience, it just makes it hand to follow the story. I think what was happening was the cast of Sesame Street were trying to agree on a movie they could make; Cookie Monster thought an invasion by aliens who fly giant cookies. Of course he saves the world by eating the space ships. Elmo looks like he regressed to the 60s to sing & dance while riding a rainbow. Chef & chicken stage a musical with the finale seeing chicken blasting out of a trombone with a bungy rope attached to his foot. Bert & Ernie look to be into travelling, as they ride a camel in desert, then scuba dive on a colourful reef. Of course I could be totally wrong here but that's what it looked like. ET AdventureRide with ET on a bicycle through the forest evading police before travelling through space to ET's Planet to help save it. Almost identical to the Hollywood version, right down to the passport, but in Japanese. | Picture: Jurassic Park
| Jurassic Park Climb aboard your river boat and make your way through the Park passing numerous dinosaurs going about their daily business. Just as you are getting comfortable you tumble over the waterfall for a big splash down! |
