The Queen of the Skies in a Hotel's Backyard:

A Tale of the Corendon 747

In the heart of Amsterdam, amidst the bustling metropolis and the iconic canals, lies a sight that is both extraordinary and unexpected: a Boeing 747, the "Queen of the Skies," parked in the backyard of a hotel.

The journey of this particular 747-400 began in 1989 when it was delivered to KLM as the "City of Bangkok." For decades, it crisscrossed the globe, carrying countless passengers to destinations far and wide. However, as the aviation industry evolved and the 747 gradually became less efficient compared to newer aircraft, its days as a commercial airliner were numbered. KLM retired the 'City of Bangkok' (registration PH-BFB) in November 2018, and it was subsequently purchased by Corendon Hotels.

The process of transporting the 747-400 "City of Bangkok" to the hotel was a logistical challenge. The massive aircraft had to be carefully moved from the airport to its final resting place, navigating through city streets and avoiding obstacles along the way. It made the famous 5-day journey across the fields and the A9 motorway in February 2019. A specialized transport company was tasked with the delicate operation, which involved using heavy-duty equipment and careful planning.

Once the 747-400 "City of Bangkok" was in place, it underwent a transformation to prepare it for its new role as a hotel attraction. The interior of the aircraft was gutted, and the exterior was repainted in the colors of Corendon Hotels. The resulting structure, while no longer a functional aircraft, still retains its distinctive shape and features, making it a striking sight.

The Corendon 747-400 "City of Bangkok" has quickly become a popular destination for both hotel guests and aviation enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the interior of the aircraft, marvel at its engineering, and learn about its history. The hotel has also incorporated the 747 into its offerings, providing guests with opportunities to dine inside the aircraft or even stay in a room with a view of the iconic plane.

Beyond its role as a tourist attraction, the Corendon 747-400 "City of Bangkok" also serves as a reminder of the progress and evolution of aviation. It represents a time when the 747-400 "City of Bangkok" was the pinnacle of commercial air travel, connecting people across the globe. By preserving this historic aircraft, Corendon Hotels has ensured that future generations can appreciate the legacy of the "Queen of the Skies."
