The White Lion

Once part of a hotel, the White Lion has been a pub since at least 1806 when the landlord was one Abraham Whitlaw. The back wall of the pub is formed from the old Bristol city wall which used to mark the boundary of the medieval city of Bristol, and there is a section still visible in the pub. The pub's location near the city walls means that it would have been close to the action during the English Civil War. It is possible that soldiers and civilians alike sought refuge or refreshment within its walls during times of conflict.

The steps down to the gents are from the old city gaol which has long since been demolished. More recently, around 50 years ago, the pub was known locally as “the cheese pub” as the landlord had a large display of different cheeses behind the bar.

The White Lion has a unique and cosy atmosphere – small in size but big on welcoming hospitality. Its clientele is made up of regulars, passers-by and Bristolian folk. Perfect for general conversation and occasionally a sing song. There is also outdoor seating which, being situated opposite the Cenotaph piazza, is the perfect place to sit out and while away the time as the world goes by.

Very much a real ale pub with 5 on offer featuring Wickwar Wessex cask conditioned ales plus regularly changing guest ales.
