Unkai Terrace

Tomamu

A Heavenly Escape: Introduction to the Sea of Clouds

Perched high above the Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, the Unkai Terrace is one of Hokkaido's most iconic summer attractions. The term "Unkai" literally translates to "Sea of Clouds," a rare meteorological phenomenon where low-lying clouds settle into the valleys, leaving only the mountain peaks poking through like islands in a white sea. It is a place where the air is crisp, the silence is profound, and the views are unlike anything else on Earth.

Visitors arrive via a scenic gondola ride in the pre-dawn hours, fueled by the anticipation of catching the perfect sunrise. While the phenomenon depends on specific weather conditions, the terrace is designed to offer a "walk in the clouds" experience regardless of the mist. With architectural marvels like the Cloud Walk and various observation decks, it provides a 360-degree panorama of the Hidaka Mountains and Mount Tokachi that remains etched in your memory forever.

From Maintenance Peak to Global Phenomenon: A Brief History

The origins of the Unkai Terrace are surprisingly humble. Years ago, the area was primarily used by ski resort maintenance staff who worked on the gondolas during the summer months. These workers were the first to regularly witness the stunning morning cloud formations and often spoke of the "mystical view" they saw before the resort opened for the day. Recognizing the potential for a world-class attraction, Hoshino Resorts officially opened the terrace to the public in 2006.

Since its opening, the terrace has undergone several massive renovations to enhance the visitor experience. What started as a simple viewing platform has evolved into a sophisticated "Cloud 9" project, featuring artistic installations designed to help visitors interact with the clouds. Today, it stands as a testament to how local natural beauty, when paired with thoughtful design, can transform a quiet mountain peak into a bucket-list destination for travelers from around the globe.

The Science of the "Cloud Waterfall"

The Unkai at Tomamu isn't just one type of cloud; there are actually three distinct types you might witness. The most famous is the "Pacific Ocean Unkai," caused by cold air from the sea moving inland and spilling over the mountains. This creates a spectacular "cloud waterfall" effect where the mist appears to flow down the slopes. Understanding the weather forecast is part of the fun, as the resort provides an "Unkai Probability" percentage every morning.

The Cloud 9 Gallery of Experiences

The terrace isn't just a flat deck; it’s a series of nine unique viewing stations known as the Cloud 9 Gallery. These include the Cloud Pool, a giant net that lets you float over the drop-off, and the Contour Bench, a massive seating area shaped like topographical lines that can hold 200 people at once. These installations are designed to change your perspective of the landscape, making the visit an interactive art experience rather than just a photo op.

Postcards from the Sky

One of the most charming traditions at Unkai Terrace is the "Cloud Post" located at the summit. Visitors can purchase unique wooden postcards and stamps at the terrace shop. If you write a message and drop it into the blue mailbox on the mountain, the resort will mail it anywhere in the world for free. It’s a wonderful way to send a piece of your "heavenly" vacation to friends or family back on solid ground.
